About
“Who are you?” said the Caterpillar.
This blog is a joint project between Cale Gibbard and Robin Langer.
Cale Gibbard
I’m Canadian and living in Ontario. I have a bachelor’s degree in pure mathematics from the University of Waterloo. I’m working with Robin on this blog in order to help publicise ideas and concepts which I think are beautiful and could use more recognition, as well as to provide some sort of record of some of the things that I’ve been thinking about.
I’m currently working for iPwn Studios Inc. helping to write a game for mobile devices called BloodKnight, in Haskell. I’m also in the early stages of writing a book on functional programming in Haskell with Edward Kmett.
My current main research interests lie in the interactions between category theory, functional programming, logic, topology, and algebraic combinatorics. There are points at which two or more of these subjects come together and provide nice correspondences and analogies through which accumulated knowledge and intuitions can be transferred.
I’m also (less actively now) looking for students to tutor, in either mathematics or functional programming. A wide variety of topics would be okay, ranging from introductory material through to undergraduate topics, or my own areas of interest. My current hourly rates are 15 CAD for students, 25 CAD for working professionals, and 30 CAD for those studying for the MBA prep exam. These prices are somewhat negotiable. If you’re interested, you can contact me via e-mail or on FreeNode IRC. (Once you’ve logged in, you can talk to me by typing /query Cale and then sending a message. If I’m at my computer, I’ll usually respond.)
Robin Langer
I am originally from Australia, but spent several years in Thailand and now live in France. I have a Masters degree in Pure Mathematics from the University of Melbourne. I am interested in algebraic combinatorics, symmetric functions, symbolic algebra, Littlewood-Richardson puzzles, functional programming, Macdonald polynomials, Quantum groups, Hecke Algebras, representation theory, linear algebra, classical mechanics, and many other things besides….
Currently I am working as a private math tutor in the Paris region whilst vaguely considering doing a phD in applied statistics so as to render myself more employable.
My masters thesis has been published and can be purchased from amazon. Or you can download it for free from the arxiv. I also have a paper with my former supervisor in the refereed online journal “Symmetry, Integrability, and Geometry: Methods and Applications”. This is also available from the arxiv.
The best way to contact me is via email.
If you are interested in tutoring, here is a reference from one of my students, Nicholas
:
I am currently doing IB Standard Level maths and have been using Robin Langer as a private tutor once a week for several months now. I have found that she is very approachable, extremely patient and very knowledgeable. Through these tutoring sessions I have raised my level of maths and I am now a lot more confident in my ability.
I would recommend Robin to anyone that feels they need extra help in Maths because she will certainly help you.
